CNIB springs into the next phase of the “Get on Board” transit campaign

In the fall of 2023, CNIB introduced our new strategic plan, “The Way Forward,” to influence real change for people who are blind, Deafblind, or have low vision. One of the three pillars outlined in the plan focuses on Safe and Accessible Journeys, and in October 2023, CNIB launched the “Get on Board” campaign as our first initiative under this part of the plan.

The Get on Board campaign highlights the barriers people with sight loss face while using publicly funded fixed-route transit systems in municipalities across Canada. It provides opportunities for transit and government stakeholders to learn more about these barriers through bus ride-a-longs with passengers who are blind, low vision or Deafblind and to discuss the next steps for meaningful change at community town halls. It also provides opportunities for CNIB to develop and strengthen relationships with government and transit officials in each participating community.

Following the successful fall launch, CNIB will enter the campaign's next phase this Spring, from May 16 to June 6, in twelve communities across the country. As with the Fall campaign, the Spring campaign will include a bus ride-along with people who are blind and local public officials, as well as a “secret rider” survey for people to report on the barriers they encounter while using public transit.
